Origin

Butter King traces back to Seremban in Negeri Sembilan, a region well known for producing high-quality durian cultivars. It's been a familiar name in Malaysian durian circles for decades, valued less for complexity and more for its consistently smooth, satisfying eating experience.

What It Looks Like

The fruit is rounded, with a slightly convex top and bottom, and thorns that are moderately spaced and rounded rather than sharp — giving it a friendlier, less intimidating appearance than spikier varieties. Once opened, the flesh is a soft lemon-yellow to golden colour, plump and full-looking in each pod, with seeds on the larger side.

Aroma & Flavour

Butter King's aroma is noticeably gentler than more pungent varieties — a light, dairy-like sweetness rather than a heavy, pungent hit — which makes it a comfortable entry point for durian newcomers. On the palate, it's predominantly sweet, with a subtle astringent edge that keeps the richness from feeling one-note. Some describe a faint savoury undertone alongside the sweetness, but bitterness plays a much smaller role here than in varieties like Musang King or Black Thorn.

Texture

This is where Butter King earns its name. The flesh is thick, dense and exceptionally smooth, with a melt-in-the-mouth, almost silky consistency — genuinely reminiscent of soft butter. It's a standout choice for anyone who prioritises texture as much as flavour.
